Vivendi challenges "work product" laws
Last week, some World of Warcraft users and at least one auction site, have been sent a cease and desist request. The legal department at Vivendi Universal Inc., owners of Blizzard Entertainment, said in the letter that if those they contacted did not respond, Vivendi would “have no other alternative but to review all legal remedies available… including taking formal legal action to protect our rights.”
Aside from the hiddeously bad PR this will generate I think blizzard is on shakey ice. Game items are not the exclusive "property" of game devs. It's a combination of their IP, yes, but also a "work product" of the players. I really don't think they're going to like where the lawsuits go.
